Negotiating the Empire beyond the Temples: the diversity of political power
In the mid-sixth century BCE, the Persians created an empire that was unparallelled in size and duration—something that could not have been achieved without the recruitment of local power groups into the imperial project. Traditionally, temples and priests have been imagined as prime venues and interlocutors of the power negotiations between conqueror and conquered. The Cyrus Cylinder, to name just one example, is usually seen as a product of the priesthood of Marduk, keen on legitimizing the new regime. However, this focus on temples and priesthoods is, at least partly, determined by the fact that much of the textual archive from Persia’s conquered regions, including Yehud, Babylonia, and Egypt, was produced in and by these institutions.
In this session, we want to invite participants to consider evidence for the societal diversity of power negotiations, both at the inception of the empire and during its long, two-century existence. Can we identify some of this diversity (e.g. the military, mid- and low-level bureaucrats, tribes, merchants) and come to a more nuanced understanding of the limitations that existed both on the power of the Persian state and that of temples and priests?
